Canine food allergies – hard to identify

Canine food allergies are very common , in fact food is one of the main triggers of allergic reactions in dogs

An allergy is an overreaction of the canine immune system against agents known as allergens. In this case the allergens are found in the dog’s food. These canine food allergies can sometimes develop in response to a food that your dog has safely eaten before. In a lot of cases, an allergy goes unnoticed because the dog has eaten the same food for months or maybe years with no adverse reaction.

The ingredients in dog foods that can cause canine allergies could be meat, cereals or even chemicals used as preservatives. The first symptoms of allergies can occur as young as 6 months in some dogs, especially food allergies. But generally, canine allergies target dogs of around 2-3 years of age.

The most common symptoms of canine food allergies consist of the appearance of spots or red patches in different parts of the body, depending on the type of allergy. The areas most commonly affected are the lips, ears, feet, eyes, legs and rump. These outbreaks can be very itchy and a dog can scratch so much that the skin become broken and infection can set in.

Canine food allergies can only be identified by putting your dog on a strict hypo-allergenic diet of white meat rice and vegetables, preferably prepared at home, and gradually introducing other foods until the allergen is found. This is certainly laborious, but it can identify positively responsible for food allergy if done correctly.

Canine food allergies can produce other symptoms as well, such as vomiting, diarrhea, sneezing and even behavioral problems. It is usually treated with antihistamines or, in serious cases, steroids. These can have adverse reactions, so natural remdies for canine food allergies is a better option if possible.
