Canidae Vs. Natural Balance?

Right now I am feeding my two dogs Canidae. I live about an hour and a half away from any stores that sell it so I usually purchase it online. The site I get it from has, for some reason, increased the shipping and handling. I would pay $28 for the food and $24 for the shipping and handling. I love Canidae and don’t really want to switch, but that is crazy!! Anyway…the PetCo here sells Natural Balance. I have looked at the ingredients and they both seem excellent to me. I would just like a few more opinions. Here are the ingredients in both foods:
Canidae
Chicken Meal, Turkey Meal, Brown Rice, White Rice, Lamb Meal, Chicken Fat (preserved with Mixed Tocopherols), Herring Meal, Flax Seed, Sun Cured Alfalfa Meal, Sunflower Oil, Chicken, Lecithin, Monocalcium Phosphate, Potassium Chloride, Choline Chloride, Linoleic Acid, Rosemary Extract, Sage Extract, Dried Enterococcus Faecium, Dried Lactobacillus Acidophilus Fermentation Product, Dried Aspergillus Oryzae Fermentation Extract, D

They are both good foods. I prefer Canidae over NB because Canidae has higher meat content. But if you can get NB locally and not Canidae, NB is still better than 90% of foods on the market.

I think Natural Balance is a great food. I feed it to my dog as well. I use to feed Canidae but basically for the same reason stopped being able to afford it. The only thing with Natural Balance is to avoid the one that it the potato based. It is full of basically fillers. It is considered to be hypoallegernic but if your dog has no problem with the other kinds of Natural Balance than I would not use it. Good Luck with the switch and dont forget to wean your dog off the Canidae by first going to a 3:1 ratio (Canidae:Natural Balance) then to a half half and then to a 1:3 eventually giving you all the new brand of food like Natural Balance

As you know Canidae is a great feed. Because of the price I recently switched from Canidae to Exclusive by PMI and have not noticed any change in my dogs. Natural Balance has solid ingredients, but unless you have a working dog or outside dogs in cold climates I would talk to the vet about the Crude Protein that is 23.0% minimum. Below is a list of other high quality feeds.

  • it’s a good food. not quite as good as canidae, but it’s still up there.
the reason why i say it’s not as good, is because the first ingredient on the natural balance is chicken with the water still in it. if you remove the water, it would make the brown rice the first ingredient of the food. ideally, you want the first ingredient listed to be a named meat in meal form.
if your petco carries solid gold, i would recommend you take a look at that as well.

    Jenlove is an idiot. Seriously.
Anyway, both are pretty good, but Canidae is known to be the best. But Natural Balance is not a bad choice. I used to feed my dog Canidae but he’s allergic to something… so now we give him Natural Balance hypoallergic formula with Duck+Potatoes.

Canidae is a good food. Can you not find another on-line source?
I also use NB (duck and potato) for a dog I have that has serious allergies and skin issues and she does VERY well on this.
