Should I Put My Dog On A Diet?

If your dog is getting fat it could be either because he is eating excessively or not getting adequate activity, in all probability both. It’s not as simple as lowering his food intake because it may be what you’re feeding your pet, not so much the volume.

Most dog owners will out their dogs on foods that are “Lite”, “Senior” or “Calorie Controlled” but here’s the thing. These low fat varieties may contain a reduced amount of fat, but they are almost always higher in carbohydrates. Carbohydrates for dogs can change insulin release in the body and be stored as excess weight.
