How To Stop Your Dog From Jumping

There are more than a few explanations why a dog jumps on furniture, family members, a guest or even the owner. You are thinking about how you can get the jumping to stop, so here are a couple of possible reasons as to why your companion does what he does and how it can be avoided. A dog may want to show their dominance and he does so by positioning himself on higher places or on top of a person.

Another reason could be the canine’s enthusiasm or excitement over something. The dog jumps onto its owner or someone familiar because of the happiness and excitement it feels when he sees them. It could very well be their way to greet the person. Giving treats to dogs when she jumps also shows it to find out that when it jumps it will get a prize. Some owners teach their pets to jump and so they jump even when they are not asked to. Some owners just aren’t aware that they gave their companions that idea.

Owners oftentimes give their companions rewards for doing something good. But they choose to ignore the fact that the dog jumped right after doing it and now your canine believes that jumping equals rewards. When dogs jump over the visitors, whatever their reasons are, they commonly frighten and annoy them. This dog behavior would want to be controlled by owners, as much as possible.

Stop A Dog From Jumping

What could owners do to stop the dog from jumping? There are different ways to teach the dog not to jump. One option is to not acknowledge him when he jumps up. By handling the situation this way your companion will learn what causes you to ignore him, and will figure out what pleases you. Owners should try to turn their back when the dog is about to jump over them. Another way also to stop the dog from jumping is to stoop or kneel when greeting the dog. Since a person is higher, there is a tendency for the dog to jump onto him to greet or look at his face. Another way to stop the dog from jumping is to teach him other things like the “sit,” “stop” or other commands that would prevent it from jumping.

Owners should not forget to praise or compensate the dog when it does something delightful, including not jumping. Taking the dog for a walk or giving food is a nice way to reward his good actions. Avoid hurting or punishing the dog as this will not really help in teaching it not to jump. It should also be remembered that when using commands with dogs, owners should be consistent with the words or cues to avoid confusion.

The desired results can be achieved by the owners with the help of many methods. Owners just have to be patient and eager to teach their dogs properly. As it is with any type of training, even stopping the jumping you need to regard the relationship between you and your companion. The results you are seeking will only be accomplished if there is proper communication and understanding between the two.
