Gave Up A Dog I Could Not Care For – Bad To Get Another?

Found a sweet, abandoned dog in bad health. I would have kept him, but I live in a small apartment and am not home enough to take him out regularly. So, I spent a couple hundred dollars for the vet and groomer, nursed him to health and then found him a new home. I only had him a couple of weeks, but I miss him terribly and cry every night now that he’s gone. I didn’t know I would feel like this!
I’m a graduate student and I am only home about 4 or 5 hours a day excluding sleep time, but I’m thinking of adopting another (smaller) dog that I can paper or litter train for the apartment. Bad idea?
PS – I’m allergic to cats!

Dogs need lots of love and attention. They really do. It’s so
not fair to get one if your not going to be home to take care of it. I know you miss the other dog, but you did a good thing.
At least you have a good heart. There are other pets you can
get besides a cat. I have a parrot, a quaker. They don’t get
very big, and teaching him to talk and to do other tricks has
been very rewarding. I’m very proud of him. Maybe you should consider that. Or wait until you do have the time to
    take care of a dog.

Yea, thats a bad idea. if yu cant take care of a dog, then dont get another even if its smaller, i guess. it whas really nice of you to nurse that dog back to health, good job.

Instead of getting a dog of your own right now, since you said you really only have 4-5 hours of waking time each day at home, why not volunteer at an animal shelter. Help care for the dogs there, take them for walks, or to the park to play with them. This way you get some companionship of a dog and a dog gets some fun time and exercise they need. You’ll be helping them and getting the benefits of being with dogs.

Thank you so much for taking in the stray dog and getting him up to par. You did the right thing by finding him a good home, when you knew you could not take care of him the way you would have liked.
If I were you, I would wait until you had more time to spend with a pet. That way you and your pet will both be happier and enjoy each others company..

Get a guinea pig,a rat or a hamster. Dogs need more attention than that.

Yes it is a bad idea. Dogs need people. A minimum of 8 hours a day socialization with you would be best, including 1-2 hours a day of walks to work off excess energy. I fear that a dog left alone for 20 hours a day would be way too destructive for you since they would probably be bored and lonely. Think about it. How would you feel being trapped in your apartment for 20 hours a day? Even with daily walks you might start loosing your mind.

Not a good idea. Dogs require alot of love and attention and you are not home but a couple of hours a day you do not have the time that the animal needs. It would be very selfish of you to get an animal you do not have time for!!

Aww you can only spend a few hours a day with the pour guy =[? I think the dog would need more attention. I think maybe in a year or two, when you hav more space && time you should purcase a dog.

I think its fine as long as youre not a repeat offender.I find it admirable however that you did take care of the dog and found him a good home and didnt dump him like a lot of other people
Dogs however take a lot of time so do know its probably best not to get a dog thatll require a lot of maintenance and time.Puppies and some dogs in my experience take a lot of time and can become destructive when left alone for too long

Maybe you should get a smaller dog, because your apartment is not suitable to hold a big dog. Big dogs need a lot of space to run and you will also have to teach them, just like a child. If not and it’ s being neglected, it can be pretty destructive.
I suggest you getting a smaller dog, because it’ s easier to handle than big dogs and it needs not as much space as big dogs, ‘cos your dog is going to suffer if it was to stay home all day long, alone. It will be better for it to stay in a much larger homes and get more space to run, it will be much more happier.

Ya, I agree that getting another dog is a bad idea. You just feel like filling a void from the dog you saved. You did a great thing though. Not very many people would do that. You will be able to get another dog some day….just not today, thats all.

Yes, bad idea. You do not have the resources to properly care for a dog at this time.

You said yourself that you didn’t have time for a dog so I think you should really think hard before going out and getting another. Think of how much you could really do for your dog and weigh the odds. If it would be good for you, bad for the dog ,like you described it might be best to wait for a while until you have more time. Think it out is all I am saying. If you think you could make the time for it (it is a life and takes a lot of time and money) then decide from your decision.

Yes bad idea. Dogs need more then 4 or 5 hours of your time a day. Wait until you have more time for a pet before you get one. Good job on the dog you helped find a new home.
